Invisalign, The Secret Behind Justin Bieber’s Smile

Justin Bieber, the Canadian pop star, has recently decorated the newsstands around North Sydney because of several run-ins with the law.

In Toronto, he faces charges of assaulting a limousine driver.

In Los Angeles, a neighbour accuses him of egging a house.

In Miami, he’s dealing with charges of driving under the influence and resisting arrest.

In Washington, the White House is looking into a petition to deport the singer from the United States to Canada because of his recent mishaps.

And pretty much everywhere he goes, the 19-year-old boy wonder is trailed by a strong aroma of marijuana, hinting at some heavy substance use.

Like his close friend Miley Cyrus, Bieber appears to working through some issues with authority and identity.

But while it’s hard to overlook his criminal escapades, as a cosmetic dentist I have to tip my hat off to Bieber for sporting a smile that looks great anywhere.

The not-so-secret secret behind the pop heartthrob’s flawless smile lies in Invisalign invisible braces that he used consistently for more than a year. The invisible aligners offer an alternative to traditional metal and bracket braces, notorious for creating the dreaded “metal mouth” look.

The aligners are completely transparent, which makes them inconspicuous and almost unnoticeable. This makes the method popular among adults and paparazzi-loved celebrities such as Bieber.  Other red-carpet regulars who have perfected their smiles with Invisalign include Khloe KardashianGisele Bundchen, Oprah Winfrey and Serena Williams.

Unlike traditional fixed braces, Invisalign aligners can be taken off for eating and cleaning. For best results, the aligners must be worn 20-22 hours a day, which is probably why Bieber was spotted wearing them even during ritzy awards galas.

Compared to traditional braces, the invisible aligners are typically more comfortable and produce results faster. Whereas metal braces take on average 36 months to straighten the teeth, the invisible braces achieve the same in an average of 12-18 months.

The Invisalign treatment begins at a dentist’s office, where a dentist trained in the technique takes dental impressions, x-rays and photographs that are used to create plastic resin aligners for each stage of the process. Once the first aligners have been fitted, patients graduate to the next set every two weeks.

Like is the case with all braces, the effectiveness of the Invisalign aligners depends on the patient’s habits. The aligners must always be removed before eating and drinking other liquids than water, as bits of food or sugar can get caught in the device and cause cavities.

In addition, the teeth and aligners must be cleaned before placing the device in the mouth. Most patients, however, readily choose this inconvenience over the unattractive look of traditional braces.
