The Invisalign treatment does not merely involve the instalment and replacement of the aligners. For optimum results, you will need to take care of the invisible braces.

Although the Invisalign aligners, made from durable clear thermoplastic material, are built to withstand the stresses of everyday use, proper use of the contraption improves both the hygiene factor and prevents product degradation.

How do I clean the aligners?

As per the treatment protocols, you should wear each aligner for about two weeks before replacing it with another set. To ensure proper oral hygiene and maintenance of the appliance, clean the aligner before and after use.

The aligner trays are in your mouth for many hours, hence are just as exposed to bacteria and plaque as your teeth would be. Failure to clean the aligners may result in the formation of a thin white layer of dirt that would be very difficult to remove.

You may clean the retainers by gently brushing them with toothpaste. Refrain from using cleaners with harsh chemicals as you do not want your teeth and mouth to be exposed to the toxic chemicals. The Invisalign cleaning kit provides the most effective cleaning agent for the maintenance of the aligners, especially for stain removal.

Although the aligners are made of stain-resistant material, there are certain types of stains that are very stubborn and require special cleaning methods to get rid of. In such cases, you may soak the aligners for about 20 minutes in a solution comprising half a cup of water (at room temperature) and 10 drops of Miltons bleach.

Note #1: Use the Clorox cleaning technique sparingly – and only when absolutely necessary – to minimise the aligners’ exposure to bleaching agents.

Note #2: Do not expose the Invisalign aligner to temperatures higher than that of your mouth. Extreme heat conditions may distort the aligners’ plastic resin material.

Should I continue to brush and floss?

Should I continue to brush and floss?

Proper oral hygiene is a must. One of the advantages of using Invisalign is that you get to remove the appliance and brush/ floss as you normally would. For the sake of your own oral health and wellbeing, you should brush and floss daily and after every meal. To keep your teeth free from bad breath, you should also use a mouthwash twice a day. Remember, putting clean aligners on dirty teeth will encourage bad odour. Similarly, do not wear dirty aligners on clean teeth.

Can I eat and drink with my aligners on?

You are not allowed to eat or drink any hot food or beverage while wearing your aligners. You may drink cool water with the devices on, but avoid fizzy, caffeinated or acidic drinks as they may stain the aligners. Do not chew gum while wearing the aligner as it may stick to the dental device, making it difficult to clean afterwards. Although there are exceptions to the general rule, you are advised to remove the aligners before eating and drinking.

Can I smoke while wearing aligners?

To keep the aligners from being stained, you are advised not to smoke while wearing them or removing them prior to smoking.

Finally, when the Invisalign aligners are not in use, you will need to store them in their original casing that comes provided with the system. Remember to keep the case in a cool place and away from the reach of children.
