How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign is simply an effective teeth-straightening system that delivers the results but not the inconvenience of traditional braces. So what makes the Invisalign system so special? To answer that, you would need to understand how it works – by looking at the different stages of the treatment process.
Treatment usually begins at the consultation stage, where our Invisalign Dentist will discuss with you the possible treatment strategies that are suited to your specific needs. Next, dental impressions of your teeth and images of your smile will be taken. The 3D images of your teeth – generated by the advanced system – will allow you to see what your smile will look like once the straightening procedure is complete.
Based on these results, a series of clear plastic aligners will be made specifically for your teeth. The aligners, made from medical-grade polyurethane resins, pass all the regulatory requirements to be worn in the mouth.
Each custom-made aligner is to be worn for about 2 weeks and then replaced by the next in the series. The invisible braces are designed for different stages of the straightening process – with each subsequent one gently pushing your teeth closer towards the desired position.
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
Treatment takes between 6 to 15 months to complete, depending on how closely you follow the instructions. Basically, the more hours in the day you leave the removable aligners on your teeth, the better the results. For optimum results, you should refrain from removing the aligner for longer than 2 hours every day. You may, however, take them off for the purpose of eating, brushing and flossing.
Unlike braces, Invisalign is able to straighten your teeth without the pain commonly associated with wearing wires and brackets. It is possible, however, for you to experience temporary discomfort during the first few days of wearing each new aligner. The initial pressure you experience will disappear as your teeth adjust to the new position.
To date, more than a million patients have received the Invisalign treatment. The superb uptake has been increasing on the back of positive word-of-mouth referrals. This is perhaps the best indication that Invisalign not only works, but also works a treat!
